Samus, as I remember, was started as a Side-scroller, which, like Sonic the Hedgehog, gained a storyline and then went from there, and i played the original Sonic and I wish I had been able to be a more avid Samus-gamer, sadly, not all that many nintendo consoles in my family...
If you could link me to the storyline, official, as to how Samus' storyline works out, I'd probably be more inclined to swing to your way of thinking.
now like i said. Samus her self has a more complex story line and character casting. the actual universe of halo though i feel has more flesh to it.. but then again John wasn't meant to be a strong character type as more of a seldom talking one liner badass that we could put our selves into ..with some humor and interaction with cortona
as for the marathon games?..well we do have the word of god on the subject dont we?
