Porco Rosso Fanart 01 by torokun Porco Rosso Fanart 01 by torokun
Here is a little fanart/tribute to my favorite Miyazaki film. "Porco Rosso".

The theme is... "What if Porco Rosso was about racing... instead of sky pirates?"

Obviously... In order to resemble the film, I used the Savoia S.21's design elements to construct the racing car... And I felt like a criminal changing the design done by Miyazaki San.

Also, for all you gearheads/car freaks out there... please, no comment on how ridiculous the set up of the car is. I admit. This probably is not realistic... and there is no way there was that kind of wishbone suspension setup before WWII era. The point was to make it "look believeable".

I didn't change any design on Porco though... I just gave little more detailed lighting for his shirts and pants. I also tried to keep the air brush tool to minimum for the "Savoia" racing car. In the anime, I believe it was kept to maximum 3 tone cell shaded. Even on the promotional art, they kept the cell painted look all the time. So, I tried to keep the anime look as much as possible.

Still it was a lot of fun doing it.

So, here it is! for all you middle aged anime lovers out there!!!

Many many apologies to Miyazaki San!

Actually... have a look for the Lancia D50. I'd say what you've done here is pretty feasible.
torokun Featured By Owner Apr 2, 2012  Professional General Artist
D50 was its major influence.
MoD1982 Featured By Owner Apr 2, 2012
Ah, I didn't realise - it didn't mention the D50 in the description so I assumed... well, I'm glad I picked up on it anyways ^^ Excellent work sir.

That's a beast man!
I think the ride looks awesome, and you can take that seriously since I love the movie, and I actually just finished seeing it for the second time :)
It's ageless for me, and will probably stick to my nostalgia dome for the rest of my life - even beyond maybe :D
Only, porco's chin is way rounder than that... and the light makes his skin look a little unnatural...
the only problem I'd have is the lighting I think, it makes everything look a little pale to the sunny contrast of the movie, where there's a more yellow and warm atmosphere. But the whole ride, the mechanisms etc. look real cool and somewhat realistic too. I understand that you didn't put the engine uptop, and why you put those side thingy's of the engine besides the car in a stylish manner, but shouldn't they sit next to the engine? further ahead?
Oh, and you could've added Fio too, and her entrance. They are partner, right?
You've done great work, and I'm glad to be able to see it :)

Actually, you'd be interested to know that in the old days of F1/Grand Prix, teams tried to get away with designs like this to cut down on drag. Some cars had as close to fenders as you could have without actually calling them that before the design was banned.

now you see I figured his plane would look like that if it was a racer :D

I don't know about the time period of the movie, but this sort of design would be totally doable right now. At it's base, it's not all that different than a formula one car, really.

Fantastic man!

And, no worries about the suspension, there are monsters out there but the artsy people know when to give up on realism for something else =)

where do ya find ridiculous in your design???
(there were whishbones, but they were simple...>look at the VW prototypes, the citroŽn traction)
it's really great you know?
there's only one problem,Ķ it's the space for the V12 engine.

If you look closely on the clock plate on the Grandfather Clock in "Whisper of the Heart", you can see the title "Porco Rosso" on it.

I want to make that car. Is it two stroke? Is it amphibious? The things between the wheels look like pontoons.
torokun Featured By Owner Feb 22, 2010  Professional General Artist
A lot of the parts were actually inspired by real life couterpart (not to mention the Savoia from Porco Rosso). I believe it was an old Alfa Romeo... I forget...

I think it was simply for aero dynamic enhancement....
