Bronze Giant Animation Version by torokun Bronze Giant Animation Version by torokun
Here is another Ver. Torokun of the old 70's Korean Super robot. This guy's name is Bronze Giant. For what its worth, his design was pretty much original (unlike other popular 70's and 80's Korean robot designs).

It had a very interesting premise too. Originally designed as a labor/working robot, it gets hijacked by an evil villain during its development. The main hero of the show comes and takes it back and by the time it was returned, it was completed by the villain and was upgraded with all kinds of weapons and became this crazy attack robot! XD

Anyways, i wanted to keep all the original design elements. But change the proportion a bit so it feels more massive compare to Taekwon V.

Another thing I changed was making it possible to take his axe weapon apart and store the blades in his lower legs. In the original, it becomes smaller and attaches to the side of lower legs. I changed it to put it on the front side...

Anyways... I know most of you are not aware of these Korean robots. But I am having a lot of fun redesigning them.

Haha. Probably one of the worst copied design from Koreans.

First feature animation that this robot was in was called "황금날개 1,2,3 (Goldenwing 1,2,3)". Goldenwing is a code word for three super characters of the show. First being a super powered human (a power given by a dying alien), Goldenwing 2 was a robot dog that accompanies Godenwing 1. Goldenwing 3 refers to this robot. The name of the robot was "청동거인(Bronze Giant)".

Sequel was a cross over between Goldenwing and Taekwon V universe.

Thanks! The battle to me was a battle between originality and ripoffs.

It was the Bronze Giant as the original design, vs Taekwon V, the ripoff of other giant robots. A.K.A. originality vs. ripoff.

Well... It's not as clear as that...

Back in 1976, Mazinger influenced numerous different robot designs. Although it is clear that the design elements of Taekwon V is heavily borrowed from Mazinger, I think it has its own merits.

It gets a bad rep because when you come to the 80's the director who was one of the creators of Taekwon V just started literally ripping off Japanese robot designs in the follow up as well as his new films. That's why the tag of rip-off even became bigger for Taekwon V franchise. Personally, I don't consider the 80's Taekwon V series as same as the ones from the 70's.

Bronze Giant has some design elements you can trace to other japanese mechas too. But I think it was original enough where it's hard to argue...

If the creator had just molded the head differently and recolored it, it would look more original.

Bronze Giant has strong resemblance to Magne Robo Gakeen too. Not as much as Taekwon V to Mazinger Z I guess...

I like this one much more than the Mazinger-Z Rip Off. Interesting story as well.
The proportions look a bit weird (just look at the tiny head!) but working.
Next what about that korean robot which splits in five parts (central body and four limbs) and whose pilots looks pretty like the Gatchmans?

Well... I do give the original one a bit more credit than it deserves. At the time, just about any robot design looked like Mazinger. So I am not negating the influence Mazinger had. I am just saying that it was a fairly original show.

Also, the pilot's synchronizing movement to control the robot as well as the fact that it's a robot that does martial art was a very unique feature of that show. And all the villains' designs were all original.

Problem is that after about 3 sequels, when they redesigned the characters and mechs, they really started just ripping off all the Japanese anime shows (this is during the 80's). This resulted putting a "rip off" tag on this title forever. Eventually dying off by the end of 80's...

It's a shame really because it also drove other potentially cool show like the one you see in this design to the grave as well...

Imposing in a way that only old school Super Robots can quite pull off - somehow they take a design that should be silly looking and instead make it cool.

I like what you've done with the design, especially the little scuffs on his armor.
